Spirits are naturally invisible to humans and supernaturals, but some can feel their presence if they know what to look for.
Ghosts can generally alter their physical appearance based on their mood and desires.
Most spirits don't stay on the earthly plane, especially human spirits, but those with a strong will and unfinished business can willingly stay behind. However, their time on Earth is finite and they will eventually move on.
If they have lost their reason to remain on the physical plane, they are either accepted to heaven or dragged to hell, depending on the deeds they've committed throughout their living years. The spirits of supernaturals usually linger longer and are more powerful. Mentions of spirits and Ghost Whispering are taboos among supernaturals due to their fear of Death Angels.
Their brain patterns remain in death, and ghost whisperers can look into them to identify their species.

Most living beings cannot see ghosts, and usually, no ghost can make themselves visible unless they obtain an extremely powerful surge of energy that allows them to appear to humans. However, this occasion is highly rare and very unlikely. In less rare cases, a spirit might be able to make themselves known to the living when they move on to the afterlife which would manifest as a beautiful kind of light that the living can see.
